Can You Identify Any Of These Men ?
This W. M. Tipton Photograph taken in October 1889 shows the dedication of the First Vermont Brigade monument at Gettysburg PA. The 18th Vermont Regiment is attempting to identify as many men in this photograph as possible. If you can identify any of them, or if you have any information about an ancestor, or a person that attended this ceremony please contact us at eighteenthvtregt@aol.com Comprised of the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Six Infantry Regiments, the First Vermont Brigade was formed in the Fall of 1861 by native son General William F. "Baldy" Smith. It became the only brigade in the Army of the Potomac to be known by its state. The "Old Brigade" earned a hard fighting reputation at places like Savages Station, Salem Church, The Wilderness, Petersburg, and Cedar Creek. The regiments of the brigade mustered out after the completion of the war. In his book Regimental Losses in the American Civil war, Colonel William F. Fox cites eight famous Brigades known for their hard fighting qualities and for their casualties. The First Vermont Brigade stands at the top of this list, and it had the greatest loss of life of any brigade in the Union Armies.
