Vermont Civil War Council named Round Table of the Year The Vermont Civil War Council was recently named the Civil War Preservation Trust’s (CWPT) Round Table of the Year. The national award was announced at the CWPT’s annual awards ceremony and banquet held in Chantilly, VA in April. The award is given annually to honor one round table in the country whose commitment to the preservation of our nation’s hallowed grounds has been clearly demonstrated. The Vermont Civil War Council is a group that is comprised of several different Civil War Groups in the state including the Eighteenth Vermont Regiment. The group’s major fund raising effort is the annual Full Duty Banquet thru which over $33,000 has been donated to the CWPT for the preservation of Civil War Battlefields. The Council was also named to the CWPT 250 list which is a group of 250 organizations or individuals recognized for their lifetime generosity in battlefield preservation.
The award was presented to the Council at the May meeting of the Green Mountain Civil War Roundtable which is one of the organizations which comprise the Council. Left to right Lew Gage representing the Green Mountain Civil War Roundtable, Chris Kolakowski from the CWPT, Jack Anderson representing the Council, Bob Morey, of the Vermont Civil War Hemlocks, Don Wickman representing the 18th Vermont Regiment, and Dewey Jones from the Sons of the Union Veterans. _________________________________________ Eighteenth Vermont Honored for Flag Preservation In a ceremony held at the Vermont Statehouse on Thursday May 19, 2005, The Eighteenth Vermont Regiment, Inc. was recognized for its instrumental fund raising efforts and for helping to raise awareness for Vermont’s Civil War Battle Flag conservation project. A reception sponsored by the Friends of the Vermont Statehouse was held in the Cedar Creek room following the ceremony.

The check being held by Governor Douglass and 18th VT President Russ Slora represents the $25,000 that the 18th VT. has donated to the flag conservation project. _________________________________________ Tom McKenna presented with the 2005 Full Duty Award Tom McKenna of Montpelier, VT. Was presented with the 2005 Full Duty Award at the ninth annual Full Duty Banquet held April 23, 2005 at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Montpelier, VT. The Full Duty Award is presented annually by the Vermont Civil War Council to a person or organization to recognize their outstanding achievements in helping to preserve Vermont’s Civil War History. McKenna has been a long time member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and has previously served as a camp commander and as the commander of the VT Department of the SUVCW. Tom's efforts were also instrumental in helping to inventory and mark the graves of all 32 Medal of Honor recipients buried in Vermont.

Eighteenth Vermont Regiment, Inc. President Euclid Farnham presents Vermont State House Curator David Schutz with a check for $9,000.00 to be used for battle flag conservation. The funds were raised at the 2003 Civil War Expo. Textile conservator Michele Pagan and VT Statehouse Curator David Schutz remove the 1st Vermont Light Artillery Regimental Colors from the case where they were placed in 1871. The removal of this flag marks the beginning of the project to conserve and protect the 33 flags that have been housed in this case for 133 years. The Seventh Annual Civil War Expo held Saturday September 27, 2003 at the Tunbridge fairgrounds in Tunbridge, VT. was another success. The 18th Vermont Regiment would like to thank all of the living historians, exhibitors, speakers, attendees, and scout troops for making the day so successful. Burns received the award and spoke at the seventh annual Full Duty Award Banquet held in Montpelier, VT on April 12, 2003. Over $7,700.00 was raised for battlefield preservation.
Emblems of Valor: Vermont's Civil War Battle Flags program presented at Farmers' Night March 26, 2003 On March 26, 2003 the weekly Farmers' night series held at the Vermont Statehouse featured a program called Emblems of Valor: Vermont's Civil War Battle Flags.

Members of the 18th Vermont present Statehouse curator David Schutz with a check of $8,000 In a ceremony held at the Vermont Statehouse on December 18, 2002 members of the Eighteenth Vermont Regiment Inc. presented the Vermont Statehouse a check for $8,000 to help preserve Vermont's Civil War Battle Flags. ____________________________________________________ California Reenacting Group Donates to VT Civil War Flags Company E, Second Vermont Infantry Regiment, a reenacting group based in Southern California, has generously donated funds for the preservation of the Civil War flags carried by the Second Vermont Infantry during the Civil War. Ed and Ginger Nystrom traveled from Redondo Beach, California to Vermont to present the donation to the 18th Vermont and to attend this year's Vermont Civil War Expo. In addition to the $1,175.00 donated by the group, personal donations of $100.00 each were made by Ed and Ginger Nystrom and by Peter and Kristine Swavely. The 18th Vermont would like to thank Ed and Ginger Nystrom, Peter and Kristine Swavely and the entire Vermont Volunteers Historical Association (Co E, 2nd VT) for their efforts !
Ed and Ginger Nystrom acting on behalf of Company E, 2nd VT Infantry Reenacting group from California present Russ Slora (left) of the 18th Vermont a check for $1,175.00 at the 2002 Vermont Civil War Expo ____________________________________________________ Vermont Legislature appropriates $40,000 towards flag preservation Recently the Vermont Legislature passed the Capitol Budget which included $40,000 earmarked for Vermont’s Civil War Battle flags. These funds will be used to assess the condition of and to build safe storage for 34 Vermont Civil War flags which have been located in a glass case outside of the Vermont House Chamber since 1871. Once the flags have been assessed additional funds will be needed to start the conservation phase of the project. _______________________________________________________________________________
